The Sony Playstation
The Sony Playstation was one of the first, if not the first, home video game systems that could do more than just play video games. Today, it seems inconceivable or even absurd that a modern video game platform could only play video games and do nothing else. And even though we are accustomed to doing just about everything and anything on our video game consoles, the Sony Playstation was the first to combine to uses in one set-up.
The Sony Playstation, when it was released, could play Sony Playstation video games as well as play music CDs. While today, this might not seem like much of an accomplishment or something to really rave about, it sparked a revolution. An idea that one system or device can do so much more than only its intended use. If you look at modern technology today, cell phones can take pictures, MP3 players can show movies and digital camcorders can send email. However, if one tries hard enough, they may be able to link all this multi-tasking ability that we demand in our electronics to the original Sony Playstation.
Today, we can't even imagine a video game system not being able to access online play or download movies or play DVDs. But, there once was a time, not that long ago, where a VCR (remember those?) was only a VCR and where a phone was just a phone. But, with the introduction, launch and subsequent popularity of the Sony Playstation, as well as the PS2, the Sony Playstation Portable and now, the PS3, it seems that multi-tasking video game consoles are here to stay.
