History of the Playstation
For many years, the Sony corporation was known for electronic devices like portable music players, stereos, car audios, televisions and other home electronic and entertainment items. But, when Sony announced that it was entering into the lucrative and ultra-competitive home video game market, that caused the gaming, electronic, entertainment and business communities to stand up and take notice.
The original concept of the Sony Playstation was that it would be a single video game console that would play both CD video games (the kind that Playstation games are on) and conventional Nintendo cartridges. If that design actually came into fruition, it would have been a major coup and advancement in - at that time, the early 1990s - the convergent technology market. Today, it seems that everything can do more than one task. So, it makes sense that the Playstation design would be able to play more than one home video game system format.
Unfortunately, the proposed deal between Sony & Nintendo fell apart, and the multi-purpose home video game player never came to pass. But, the idea was laid down, and the framework was established for many of the everyday technological and electrical devices that we use so often today.
