The Playstation - 10 years gone

Has the Playstation - 10 years gone, since the launch of the original Sony Playstation? Actually, it hasn't. It's been 12 years in face since the Sony Playstation ushered in the modern era of video games. While new video game systems are coming out all the time, and the differences between one and the other are negligible, the Sony Playstation, when it was first released, stood head and shoulders apart from the competition and really had no peers.

A home video game system where the games were on discs instead of cartridges? While the PS nailed this concept (followed by other systems thereafter), it wasn't the first to try it out. In fact, Nintendo wanted to place video games on CDs as early as 1986 - the early days of music CDs. Sony Playstation perfected this concept before releasing the game console. It's hard to believe the Playstation is 10 years gone.

When the Playstation was launched, it was an immediate worldwide sensation. In fact, the Sony Playstation - 10 years gone of course, was the first video game console to sell over 100 million units. Now, those numbers may be followed by the Xbox 360 and the PSP, but the Playstation will always be the first.

And here's some interesting pieces of trivia for you to enjoy. When the Sony Playstation was originally launched, it retailed for $299.99 - which is the same price as the introduction of the PS2. Also, the last Sony Playstation was manufactured on - get this - March 23, 2006! Just last year! The Sony Playstation was one of the most popular and endearing video game systems of all time, and also had a unique form of longevity too. Happy birthday Playstation - 10 years gone.
