Playstation 3

In this corner, competing against the Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii is the Sony Playstation 3. Born on November 11, 2006, this bad boy comes in two types of configurations: 20GB and 60GB.

The Playstation 3 follows the original Sony Playstation and the Playstation 2 (funny how that works) and was actually first introduced to the public on May 16, 2005 - over a year before its launch date. This created a frenzy among video gamers who eagerly anticipated when they could get their hands on the PS3 to go along with the PSP and other Playstation games and consoles.

And while commercials, marketing and TV seem to be the popular way to market new and exciting products, the Playstation 3 decided to go through a different route. Its first foray into the advertising world wasn't with a fancy viral marketing campaign or with slick TV commercials. Rather, the PS3 was simply featured in advertising boards across soccer stadiums in Europe. Because of the global reach and popularity of soccer, this was a wise, smart and unique approach created by Sony.

When the PS3 was finally launched in North America, it set off a mad rush of consumers looking to buy. Limits were placed on how many consoles customers could buy, and, unfortunately, violence erupted at some stores. Soon, Playstation 3 consules were popping up on ebay at extraordinary prices - up to $3200 for a $600 system. And the strange thing is that people were buying!

If this is what happened with the launch of the PS3, just imagine what will take place when the Playstation 4 comes out!
